Today, Friday, was our first full day in Alice Springs. We had a bit of a look around town yesterday
and gathered the obligatory visitor information brochures.
This morning we visited the Old Telegraph Station, a vital
link in the early days of telegraphic communications.
The buildings have a vast array of historic information and artefacts
relating to the history of the station and of the town.
The barracks building is the oldest building in central
Australia, having been constructed in 1871, with the Station Masters house
built in 1888.
We also visited the base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. There is a museum and audio visual presentation relating to the founding and operations of the RFDS.
Interactive displays, historic paraphernalia, such as medical equipment and supplies, a variety of radios, and aviation information. A very interesting and informative visit.
This afternoon we visited ANZAC Hill, located in the centre
of town. The hill offers grand views
over the town and surrounding area. I
was surprised just how many rocky outcrops surround the town.
ANZAC Hill as the name suggests is dedicated
to all branches of service personnel, from all conflicts and actions. There are several storyboards around the
area outlining the major conflicts in which Australia has been involved.
We spent the rest of the afternoon strolling around the central
shopping area, before another bit of a relax back at the van.
